Alice Gur-Arie

Alice Gur-Arie

Alice Gur-Arie began her career in advertising as a conceptual copywriter and graphic designer. Moving client-side, she was responsible for the marketing strategy and communications programmes of global brands. 9 years ago she put aside her business management consulting work and returned to her creative roots.

This is the context to understanding Alice's practice: she is a storyteller inspired by the natural world, and the creatures that live in it, and, she seeks to appeal to the head and the heart. She mainly focuses on creating mixed media images (repainting her own photographs) that invite the viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that interprets experience into something both familiar and foreign. She also takes “straight” “slice of life” photographs, images of people in public places going about their daily lives. All her photographs are taken spontaneously; nothing is planned or staged, and most are from around the world.

A self taught artist / photographer, Alice has had 4 solo exhibitions in the UK and France, including the Embassy of Iceland and the Coningsby Gallery in London. She is represented by several galleries and Bridgeman Images internationally.

Recognition includes: ArtGeminiPrize (shortlisted); Aesthetica Art Prize (long listed); The Secret Art Prize (long listed); Terry O'Neill Photography Award (2 series nominated); Bridgeman Images Studio Award (shortlisted); Christie’s London (2 works auctioned); and the Royal Ontario Museum (winner, national design competition - Smithsonian Travelling Exhibition). LensCulture has featured her work in their Art Photography Prize Gallery.

Alice's images feature on book covers, and are held in private collections in the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Israel. Ms. Gur-Arie holds degrees in Education, English literature and Business.

In addition to Alice's full time practice, she has just completed the first draft of a two volume art book that contains a collection of her short stories and poems, and approximately 40 of her fineart photography images.

Alice is a past Trustee for Positive View Foundation, a highly respected charity whose outcome oriented Youth Empowerment Programme uses photography to give disadvantaged 16-25 year olds living on inner city London estates new skills, the ability to find their voices, and the motivation to transform their lives.
