Two Day Course in the beautiful National Trust Village of Lacock near Chippenham, next to Lacock Abbey – the birthplace of the negative/positive process by William Henry Fox Talbot.

Day 1 Starting from scratch.

  • Flash or Continuous light - advantages and disadvantages.
  • How a studio flash works – what you need to know
  • Setting up a portrait with a single light.
  • Hard light/Soft light
  • Changing the quality of the light with simple accessories.
  • Placing the main light. Using a simple reflector.
  • Using a flash meter and setting your camera.
  • Adding a second light.
  • Light shaping and control accessories.
  • Hair/background lights.
  • Getting more depth into your portraits.
  • Balancing light sources with a flash meter.
  • Professional looking Beauty Lighting on a budget

At each stage plenty of time will be allowed for taking your own photographs.

Day 2 The next step.

  • Delegates will be split into 2 groups to practise the techniques from Day 1
  • Softboxes soft diffused light and when is a softbox not a softbox?
  • Mixing Flash and Daylight – High Speed Sync
  • Lighting for full length. Lighting a white background
  • Mixing Flash and Daylight – High Speed Sync
  • Beauty Lighting how the professionals do it
  • Camera viewpoint.
  • Q & A Session

This course is supported by broncolor lighting equipment, it is used throughout but all of the techniques are the same for other makes of lighting. You will need to bring with you a camera that can be set to manual (shutter speeds and apertures) with a standard Hot Shoe. Please Note: Digital compact cameras are generally not suitable for this course and many are unable to fire the flash units.

Tea/Coffee/Fruit Squash/Biscuits are supplied and available all day.

A Course Lighting Guide is available on a USB Memory Stick at £5.00 to cover the cost of the stick, or free by email.

Pictures taken on the course are for personal use only unless a model release form is obtained. Model Release forms are available on the day for a fee of £20 paid direct to the model. Highly recommended.

Please bring your own mask to wear where needed and your own hand sanitiser and mugs.

Tutor: Chris Burfoot has been teaching studio photography for over 30years, for much of that time for the RPS.

He gained his associateship of the Master Photographers Society in 1986, closely followed by the RPS, and the BIPP.

Chris has always worked in the photographic industry and has been a lighting specialist for most of the time, working for major lighting manufacturers including Elinchrom and currently a a Lighting Consultant and trainer for Broncolor. He also ran his own very successful photo studio and wedding business for many years.

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.

If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
