About the RPS Awards

The Royal Photographic Society Awards recognise individuals working across: both the art and science of the still and moving image; working within the promotion of photography and within photographic education; and working in furtherance of the aims and ambitions of the Royal Photographic Society.

Members Awards:
RPS Fenton Medal with Honorary Membership
in recognition of dedicated service and valued voluntary contribution to the Royal Photographic Society in supporting its activities, its community, and the advancement of its objectives. Up to four may be awarded to Members or non-Members.

Members Awards:
RPS President’s Medal with Honorary Membership awarded in recognition of dedicated service and valued voluntary contribution to the Royal Photographic Society, over a sustained period in supporting its activities, its community, and the advancement of its objectives.

RPS Centenary Medal with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the art of photography.

RPS Progress Medal with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of any outstanding invention, research, publication or other contribution which has resulted in an important advance in the scientific or technological development of photography or imaging science.

RPS Eastlake Medal with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the public appreciation, enjoyment or understanding of photography through education, criticism, research, curatorship or publishing.

RPS Award for Photography Education with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a distinguished and influential contribution or achievement in the field of education in the areas of photographic art, science or technology

RPS Award for Photography Curatorship, Criticism or Research with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a distinguished and influential contribution or achievement in the field of photography criticism or research including but not limited to the areas of photographic history, art, science or technology

RPS Award for Photography Publishing with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a distinguished and influential contribution or achievement in the field of photography publishing in the areas of photographic art, science or technology.

RPS Award for Environmental Responsibility with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a distinguished and influential contribution or achievement in the use of photography to highlight or contribute to demonstrable improvement in public awareness of environmental issues.

RPS Award for Social Impact with Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a distinguished and influential contribution or achievement in the use of photography to highlight or contribute to demonstrable improvement in public awareness of social issues.

RPS Honorary Fellowship awarded for a significant personal achievement in the art of photography; the science or technology (or scientific or medical application) of photography; or in the public appreciation of photography. No more than two are given.

RPS Award for Achievement in the Art of Photography (under 30yrs) awarded to a photographer - under the age of 30yrs - in recognition of their notable personal contribution or achievement in the art of photography.

The Royal Photographic Society has adopted a wide definition of photography which refers to the art or science of the recording of light or other radiation on any medium on which an image is produced or from which any image may by any means be produced. 

Where a team is put forward, the nomination should show the role of each person concerned and to what extent and in what way each contributed to the initiation, development and exploitation of the subject of the nomination
