James Friend ASC, BSC is a British cinematographer working in film, television and commercials. He has been a fellow of the RPS since 2020.
James was born in Kent in 1985 where he developed an early interest in cinema. After qualifying as an electrician he studied under the pioneer of the digital camera, Paul Wheeler BSC who, with Phil Meheux BSC, would later go on to become his mentor.
Known for his Oscar and Bafta winning work on Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front for Netflix. He has photographed a number of BAFTA winning TV series such as Patrick Melrose and Rillington Place. He has recently wrapped filming in Macau and Hong Kong for The Ballad of A Small Player directed by Ed Berger and starring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton.
