Dr. Harry Hall FRPS

Awarded The RPS Fenton Medal in recognition of a notable contribution to the work of the Society.

Dr Harry Hall began taking photographs during mountaineering expeditions, his images were used to illustrate magazine articles. He became interested in the cultures of isolated communities living in the Himalayas; this led to a Ph.D. Ethnographic Research project into the urbanisation nomadic groups and a Fellowship of the RPS.

On joining the Documentary Group Committee he developed the Documentary Photography Awards. In 2021 the awards were expanded and a touring exhibition created. Harry managed this. It started in Oxford, moving to Fuji House of Photography in London, and on to then Newcastle, Colwyn, Inverness, Glasgow before finishing in Chippenham. An estimated 20,000 people saw the exhibition throughout 2022.

Harry liaised with different regions to help secure venues and organise local events and talks to coincide with each exhibition, he managed the galleries and the logistics of installing, removing and moving the exhibition around the country. He has continued to support the exhibition of the DPA 2023 Awards, with a touring exhibition which exhibited in 7 locations in Wales, Scotland and England and was the UK’s largest touring photographic exhibition in 2024.
