Professor Sabine Süsstrunk

Award for Imaging Science in recognition of sustained excellence or a notable contribution to the advancement and/or application of imaging science

Sabine Süsstrunk is Professor and Director of the Imaging and Visual Representation Laboratory (IVRL) at EPFL's School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC). Since September 2025, she has also been Dean of the IC School. She has also served as the first Director of EPFL’s Digital Humanities Institute from 2015 to 2020.

Sabine’s research focuses on computational photography and imaging, generative AI, image quality, and image aesthetics. She is an accomplished author with over 300 publications and holds more than ten patents. Sabine has held chair or committee roles in numerous international conferences. She is also a recognized leader in academia and industry, serving as President of the Swiss Science Council, as member of the EPFL-WISH Foundation, and on the boards for both the Swiss Radio and Television Corporation and Largo Films.

Sabine has received several awards for her contributions, including the IS&T/SPIE 2013 Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year for seminal contributions to color imaging, computational photography, and image analysis, as well as the IS&T 2018 Raymond C. Bowman Award and the 2020 EPFL AgePoly IC Polysphere Award for excellence in teaching. She holds fellowships in AIAA, ELLIS, IEEE and IS&T and is a Full Member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences.
