Planning and Photographing an Aurora Trip

Event info

NEW - This two hour workshop is online using Zoom.

Most of us would probably love to see the Northern Lights and this workshop covers first planning the trip and then how to photograph or video and post processing.  What planning is there you might ask, surely I go in the winter months. Yes but when in the month should you go? Do you take a ship or go for a land based trip. Can I do it on my own? Where is a good place to see the Lights?  Once you are going, what equipment do you need? Do you video or take photos and how do you process afterwards? These and many more questions will be answered along with any questions you may have.

Lilian Hobbs LRPS is an astrophotographer who has been on several successful and unsuccessful Aurora trips taking both land based and ship options. Come hear her experiences and recommendations and see the good and not so good aurora photos.

The Tutor:

Dr Lilian Hobbs FRAS LRPS is a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and has been an amateur astronomer for many years. She is well known as a speaker at local astronomy clubs and more recently at photography groups too. Lilian’s real interest in astronomy is astro photography and her garden observatories have been featured on the BBC Sky at Night.  Astronomy has seen the introduction of many new ideas to help, observe and photograph the night sky. Lilian is always keen to try out these new ideas and share her thoughts on their use, e.g. have you ever thought of using a gimbal or a GoPro for astrophotography? Lilian has also written a couple of astronomy books.
