RPS Speaker at Photo London: Heather Agyepong

Event info

For the third year running, the RPS will be presenting a speaker at Photo London. On 15 May 2020 Heather Agyepong in a presentation titled Agency, Resistance and Self Care: Black subjects in Photography and your White Gaze will be discussing her artistic practice as well as her new body of work Wish You Were here, inspired by the life of African American vaudeville performer and activist Aida Overton Walker. The series uses satirical commentary and depictions of radical self-worth in an attempt to disrupt the roadblocks affecting our collective mental health.

Her presentation and Q+A will take place at Photo London on Friday, 15 May 2020 from 1500 to 1550. Tickets can be booked directly at the Photo London website here (booking opening shortly).

Heather Agyepong is a visual artist, performer/actor and maker who lives and works in London. Her practice is concerned with mental health and well-being, activism, invisibility, the diaspora and the archive.

She uses both lens-based practices and performance with an aim to culminate a cathartic experience for both herself and the viewer, along with the technique of re-imagination to engage with communities of interest and the self as a central focus within the image.

Heather was nominated for the Prix Pictet and Paul Huf awards in 2016 and 2018. She has work in a number of collections including Autograph ABP, the Hyman Collection, New Orleans Museum of Art and Mead Art Museum. In 2019 three works from her series Too Many Blackamoors were selected for the RPS International Photography Exhibition 161.
