In Approaching Photography Paul Hill looks at photographs as modes of expression and explores the diversity of approaches taken when creating photographs. It emphasises the importance of contextualisation to the understanding of the medium, diving into the ideas behind the images and how the camera transforms and influences how we see the world. With abundant examples by some of the world’s finest practitioners, it invites us to consider the foundations of photography’s past and the digital revolution’s impact on the creation and dissemination of photographs today.

Paul Hill worked as a newspaper reporter, climbing instructor and photo-journalist before becoming course leader of the Creative Photography course at Trent Polytechnic in 1976. The same year he set up the world-renowned The Photographers' Place in Derbyshire. He became a Professor in 1995 at De Montfort University running one of the UK's first postgraduate courses in photography. Paul was instrumental in setting up the RPS Contemporary Group. He remains a visiting Professor and runs his own workshops including some for the RPS. His website is: http://www.hillonphotography.co.uk/
