Based on his classic book Approaching Photography, Paul will tackle how photography can be used to say something rather than to show something.
His book shows how photographers have approached a diverse range of situations and ideas in order to express something. Paul will use the book's illustrations, provided by some of the world's top photographers, to demonstrate that our unique personalities can be in the pictures we make.
An understanding of how you can reflect thoughts and ideas in photographs will help you to extend your visual experience and create an individual look to your photography.
What you will do
After an introductory presentation - What is Self-Expression? - you will be given short practical exercises followed by feedback and discussion that are aimed to develop your photographic seeing and thinking in new ways.
There will be 8 - 10 participants, so this is a shared experience. It will run from 10.00 to 17.00 (BST) and participants will have to email low res images to Paul for feedback and group discussion.
What you will need
- A camera - anything from a smartphone upwards is fine. Remember that a camera is just a tool, the important thing is that you are comfortable using it.
- Something to edit your images on - e.g desktop computer, laptop, ipad etc.
- A reasonable WiFi connection is necessary. Zoom should be downloaded and installed onto your computer that has a webcam and microphone.

The tutor will need access to your email address to enable him to send you any information regarding the workshop. We will presume that by booking this course you are giving permission unless you contact us to state otherwise.

The Tutor:
After a career in journalism, Paul Hill became a full-time lecturer in photography at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1974 where he was later appointed head of the trend-setting Creative Photography course. In the seventies he also set up, with his late wife, Angela, The Photographers’ Place – the UK’s first residential photography workshop – at their Peak District home.
A visiting professor of photography at De Montfort University, Leicester, he has exhibited regularly since 1970 throughout the British Isles, Europe, North America, Japan and Australasia and is co-author (with Thomas J. Cooper) of Dialogue with Photography, Approaching Photography (new edition came out in December 2020), White Peak Dark Peak, and Corridor of Uncertainty. He was the first chairman of the RPS Contemporary Group and the Contemporary Distinctions Panel, and was given the Society’s Education Award in 2016. He has been running workshops for the RPS for 10 years. In 1994 Paul was awarded an MBE by The Queen for services to photography. www.hillonphotography.co.uk

The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.
If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
