This course is delivered online and provides an in-depth look at Lightroom’s creative tools to help you develop your own personal editing style. We’ll be exploring Lightroom’s Presets and plugins together with darkroom-style techniques for black and white and exploring advanced masking techniques using the Adjustment Brush. Through a series of case-studies, Tim will show you how to plan and execute sophisticated edits on your images using Silver-Efex Pro and Analog Pro plug-ins and how to develop up different versions and styles of the same image.

The course uses Lightroom Classic software for both Mac and Windows PC users and provides a follow-on workshop for those who have completed the Introduction to Lightroom course.

The workshop is run using Zoom video conferencing software and you will be able to watch and interact with your tutor during each topic presentation and ask questions throughout the day. All presentations and notes are provided to you before the event starts, together with tips on how to prepare for the course and use Zoom, if you’ve never used it before.

In addition to the presentations, you can practice the techniques at home using your own images. We encourage you to share questions and work in progress images with other delegates, although this is entirely optional.

Welcome and outline of the day

Topic 1: Understanding Lightroom’s creative flexibility. Using Presets and Sync Functions. Making the most of Virtual Copies, Snapshots and External editors. Downloading and installing third-party creative Presets

Topic 2: What makes a great final image? What are the best editing tools to use? Learn how to develop your DSLR images into exhibition-style results.

Topic 3: Making perfect masks with the Adjustment Brush. Learn how to create sophisticated but invisible edits using advanced Adjustment Brush techniques.

13.00 Lunch break

Topic 4: Black and White darkroom styles. Learn how to make eye-catching monochrome separations and how to mimic traditional chemical print styles such as Lith, Split Toning and Hand-Tinting.

Topic 5: Using the Silver Efex Pro and Analog Efex Lightroom plug-ins as external editors. Create special colour and mono effects using the popular plug-in. Learn how to get the best out of floating control points.

Requirements:

A Mac or Windows computer or laptop with Lightroom Classic installed.

Internet access

A webcam or microphone for interacting (your laptop may have these built-in already)

Speakers to hear the presentations

You will need to install the Zoom app, but full instructions will be provided.

The Tutor: Dr Tim Daly is Senior Lecturer in Photography at Chester University.

His specialist subjects are photography production and artist's publishing. Tim teaches on all levels of the BA Photography programme with special responsibility for practice based modules, and also contributes to the MA Fine Art programme. Tim has had many photography books published, and has been teaching RPS workshops for a number of years.
