Event info

Fully Booked - please contact us to go on the waiting list.

Limited to 10 places.

This course is delivered online and is an intermediate level workshop on image compositing - the creative way of assembling new images from multiple photographs. The course shows you how to assemble convincing images from different source files and guides you through the complex techniques of cutting out, masking and assembling. Tim will provide you with sample files linked to the techniques, so you can practice during or after the workshop. Some experience of Photoshop is useful and this is an ideal follow-on course to Tim’s Introduction to Photoshop workshop.

The course uses Adobe Photoshop software for both Mac and Windows PC users.

The workshop is run using Zoom video conferencing software and you will be able to watch and interact with your tutor during each topic presentation and ask questions throughout the day. All notes and sample files are provided to you before the event starts, together with tips on how to use Zoom, if you’ve never used it before.

We encourage you to share questions and work in progress images with other delegates, although this is entirely optional.

Welcome and outline of the day

Topic 1: Composite styles and an overview of methods. Before we start editing, we’ll look at examples of composite images and work out how they were achieved. We’ll develop a solid understanding of the core techniques including image resolution differences, layers and shape transforming.

Topic 2: Masking techniques. Learn how to make Photoshop’s myriad selection and masking tools work to your advantage. Combine techniques and explore how to use gradient masks, layers and channels together. We’ll explore a sample project so you can experiment.

Topic 3: The Pen Tool for precision. In this session we’ll experiment with Photoshop’s most difficult tool - the Pen Tool. Using sample images, you’ll learn how to build a path around a complex shape and how to convert this into a selection or mask.

Topic 4: Fine tuning. In the final session we’ll learn how to synchronise colour and opacity to create convincing illusions. You’ll learn how to fix visible errors and how to prepare your file for export, printing or online display.
