Event info

This is our second visit this winter to Welney, in Norfolk; this time with the added opportunity to visit at dawn and watch and hear the sights and sounds of thousands of swans leaving the washes for their feeding grounds.

The Swan Spectacular is an extra event with an additional fee (you can also order breakfast!!). It sells out fast so if you are thinking of joining the early event, book asap/

Please see link here to event on Sunday 5 February 6.30-9am - Swans awake | WWT

There will be guides on hand to get the group to the hides to enjoy the swans waking up and flying out to the fields for the day, a fantastic range of winter wetland species from the hides and finishing the morning with a swan feed at the main hide, before returning to the centre for breakfast from the café (extra cost and book in advance).

As the event starts at 6.30am, if you are coming a distance, you may want to stay Friday night.

Swans feeds and Fly In. The swans are fed three times a day at 12 noon and 3.30 pm encouraging movement of the wildfowl for flight shots. At dusk, large number of swans return from the fields where they have been feeding during the day to roost on the washes. If we are lucky with the weather, this can result in atmospheric flight shots. The haunting landscape of the Fens fills with the sound of swans calling to one another, their large feet slapping the water as they land and their wing beats as they pass over head. At 6.30 pm the swans are fed by floodlight, again a magical experience.

Hare Walks. There is a self-guided Hare Walk onto Lady Fen that can be good for views of Hare, waders and deer. Barn Owl and Short-Eared Owl are seen hunting along the banks

If you wish to stay overnight, the Travelodge at Ely is very convenient. There is an outing to Wicken and Burwell Fen on the Saturday (4th)
