Learn how Professional Documentary Photographers work

This one-day online course has proved very popular when we have run it previously and will teach you the ‘tricks of the trade’ that professional photographers use to develop engaging documentary projects.

Your tutor is Stewart Wall who began his professional photography career on a local newspaper in 1978 before freelancing for Fleet Street titles. He is also a qualified and experienced teacher of photography, specialising in camera craft, documentary photography and photo-book making.

Since 2015 he has interviewed and worked with a series of documentary photographers, including Daniel Meadows and Magnum’s Ian Berry, Martin Parr and David Hurn and will use these experiences as well as his own to teach you how to take your image making from being a series of individual images to a cohesive set with a strong narrative, from which you might decide to produce a photo-book.

Imagine I Create I Complete

The day is broken into three main sessions with breaks:

Session 1) Imagine

How to imagine your project: Deciding on what story you want to tell, and then how to tell it is one of the hardest things. Professional photographers often get told by their editor to go and get a story and in this session, you will learn the secrets of how to do that, so you can do it.

Session 2) Create

How to create your project: Documentary projects can sometimes last some time and the successful documentary photography needs to stay on track with them. In this session you will learn how to do that.

Session 3) Complete

How to Complete your project: Once you have shot your images, what will you do with them. This session will explain how to edit / post-produce your images, how to sequence your images and then different ways of how to show your work, including photobook making.

Course Documents and Portfolio Review

To ensure you get the most out of the course, when you complete the day you will receive a full set of course notes. After the event you are invited to send a portfolio of images for feedback

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for anyone who is interested in developing an understanding of documentary visual storytelling and turning their individual images into cohesive photographic projects. Participants do not need to have prior knowledge of these skills since they are covered by the course.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered online over one day using zoom.

Who is the lead tutor?

The course is taught by professional photographer Stewart Wall who is a trained and qualified teacher. He has led several social documentary and street photography events for the Royal Photographic Society and and is a member of their Distinctions Assessment Panel.

He has a BA (Hons) in photography from University of Lincoln, a BA in Graphic Design from Teesside University and an MA in Visual Communication from the University of Hertfordshire. He is currently researching Community Photography at the University of Hertfordshire.

What will participants ideally need?

Ideally participants will need some form of camera, which could be a DSLR, Mirrorless, Rangefinder, Bridge Camera or Mobile Phone. Access to Adobe Lightroom is preferable but other software can also be used.
