This month, Jennette Russell and Jennifer Hurstfield will introduce the work of the American photographer Dorothea Lange. Details to follow.

The American photographer Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) is perhaps most famous for her images of rural poverty in the 1930s Great Depression, in particular the image, Migrant Mother. This iconic image has perhaps overshadowed her lifelong pioneering work in documenting communities facing economic, social and environmental hardship and change. In this session we will also look at the breadth of her work, including her early portraits; the Dust Bowl migrants; the internment of Japanese Americans in 1942; the booming shipyards of Richmond, California in the 1940s; and the catastrophic impact of the building of a dam on a faming community in California in the 1950s. An articulate and passionate communicator about the importance of photography, we will also show a video clip of an interview with her.

There are several published collections of Dorothea Lange’s work including: Politics of Seeing (2018); Words and Pictures (2020); and A Life Beyond Limits (2009). In the July/August issue of the RPS Journal you will also find a timely article by Sally Stein on the myths surrounding the Migrant Mother image.

Meetings of the Bookworm Club take place monthly, on the 3rd Wednesday of the month when a member of the Group introduces the work of a photographer of their choice.  Interesting and varied!
