London:Midweek Monuments Statues and Remembrance on 11 / 11

Event info

POSTPONED due to LOCKDOWN

For our third trip, we have chosen the very poignant day of November 11th.

The maximum group size will be just 10 split into two distinct groups (eight plus two volunteer guides - Judy Hicks and Roger Towell) and as far as possible we will observe all the appropriate Government Guidelines relating to safe distancing which are in place at the time.

Here's the Outline Plan

We will meet at Hyde Park Corner (Meeting point and time to be confirmed as we will need to meet either before or after the two-minutes silence is observed).

We will then be able to explore and photograph the monuments at Hyde Park Corner (the Royal Artillery Memorial, the Wellington Arch, Machine Gun Corps Memorial NZ and Bomber Command Memorials), which will probably be bedecked with poppies and other symbols and messages of remembrance following the services on Remembrance Sunday.

After you have finished your photography around Hyde Park Corner, we will walk along Constitution Hill to see the Memorial Gates. continue in front of Buckingham Palace and across St James's Park to the white Portland stone obelisk, which is the Guard's Division Memorial.

We will then cut through to Parliament Square Gardens, which now house I believe 12 statues including Sir Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Millilcent Fawcett - to name but a few.

The last part of our walk will take us up Whitehall, past the Cenotaph which again I would expect to be bedecked with poppies and wreaths towards Trafalgar Square, to the the statue of King Charles1, which is, I understand, London's oldest bronze statue.

For those who wish, we will find a suitable cafe or restaurant, where we can put our feet up and enjoy a nice coffee, or something stronger!

More details of meetup points etc. will be sent nearer to the time.

Pre-registration is ESSENTIAL.

We will be operating a waiting list.
