This month, Gareth Davies will talk about Panoramic Photographers.  Here's Gareth's introduction to this talk:

The word panorama (from Greek: 'pan' - all and 'horama' - view) was first coined by the painter Robert Barker at the end of the 18th century to describe his all-encompassing views of cities, nature and battles which he showed in a purpose-built building in London. Soon after the birth of photography, panoramic cameras started to be used to photograph similar natural and built scenes, but as those who will remember being part of school photos taken with large rotating wooden cameras, panoramic photography has also had an important dimension in recording our society. This talk will focus on how panoramic photography has given us a window on society, and specifically on the work of the American photographer, Eugene O Goldbeck, born in 1892 and died in 1986. His work spans a period of immense changes in American society, and covers such diverse gatherings as banquets, baptisms, beauty parades, a Ku Klux Klan band and military parades.

Meetings of the Bookworm Club take place monthly, on the 3rd Wednesday of the month when a member of the Group introduces the work of a photographer of their choice.  Interesting and varied!
