Monument

London:Midweek Explorers: Regular Monthly Meetup

Event info

This month we explore the Monument district in the City of London.

The meeting point is Costa Coffee on the corner of King William Street and Cannon Street (address 126 Cannon Street, EC4N 6AS). 11:15 prompt start. Nearest tube station is Monument (District & Circle). There are 2 exits, which aren’t numbered so take the subway underneath King William Street exit- there is an exit just outside Costa  via the subway. The Fish Street Hill exit (the other exit) is NOT the correct exit!

After coffee, we make our way to the nearby Monument (Great Fire of London 1666 which started in the adjacent Pudding Lane – which we can visit) and after some photography, we make our way along Eastcheap to the Walkie Talkie building which is a little more modern … and offers more opportunities for photography.

Then we make our way down Lovat Lane, a old winding lane way with cobbles, a Wren Church and a view of the Shard … the contrast between old and new is obvious and spectacular.

We continue to London Bridge, and the explore along the North Bank towards Tower Hill, passing the Old Billingsgate fish market, with its spectacular weathervanes.  There are many views across the Thames – eg Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, the Shard – as well as many nooks and crannies to photograph!

You can finish at the Tower of London (Tower Hill tube, District & Circle) or continue over Tower Bridge (a few more photos?) and explore More London, ending at London Bridge (Main Line rail, Jubilee, Northern). And I’m sure we can find somewhere for lunch …
