Camber, East Sussex, UK by Tom Lloyd

This month there were less than 20 entries, but the quality was excellent. It’s challenging to choose a winner with such good photographs, but I enjoy that as well as the photographic journey to many parts of the globe

Winner

Heyder-aliyev, Baku, Azerbaijan by Sanjoy Sengupta

Stunning. This picture has it all, architecture, geometry, people and a real sense of place. It isn’t easy to take great photographs of brilliant architecture, but this shot is excellent. Obviously, the position of the photographer is critical, as are the two people who provide scale and that extra dimension that makes this such a great image. Well done

Highly Commended (In no particular order)

Parasol, Temple-of Literature, Hanoi, Vietnam by Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell

This image has a real atmosphere about it, calm and beauty. The minimalistic background, with the very understated pillars (in perfect position and complimentary colours) add to this. Obviously, the parasol in the title is a vital component adding to the air of Oriental mystery.

Open For Business, Jodhpur, India by Jo Court

We’ve all seen lots of street images of India, but this one is different enough to elevate it to another level. The street vendor’s pose and position is perfect. It’s amusing, well seen and well captured. I’m not sure about the motorbike though

Street Barbershop, Entebbe, Uganda by Thomas Andy Branson

This picture breaks a lot of the “photo rules” but that is what makes it stand out. It’s a simple image with a very limited colour palette, but that only gives the red and orange more impact. The relative positions of the two subjects are spot on. I love the two expressions, particularly the barber who seems to be in another world while he’s applying the clippers to the customer’s scalp, who seems quite unperturbed by this!
