There are many strong images with potentials, my final choices are as following:
Winner of the month
Fishing in the Subansiri River, Assam, India by David Huggett
I am immediately drawn to the serene atmosphere created by the calm water and vast sky in this picture. A beautiful composition featuring a solitary figure skilfully working with a fishing net, which adds a sense of purpose and narrative to this special scene in India.
The use of natural light enhances the soft colours and reflects beautifully off the water's surface. I appreciate how the figure is positioned off-centre, following the rule of thirds, which creates a balanced yet dynamic composition. The simplicity and harmony of the scene evoke a sense of tranquility. The artistry and the amazing geometry make this truly a compelling image and thus the “Winner of the month.”
Highly Commended
Morning Catch, Negombo, Sri Lanka by Rob Morgan
I feel an immediate sense of energy and movement in this photo. The fishermen are caught in a moment of action, skilfully handling their nets, which adds a dynamic quality to the image. The focus on the main figure is uniquely framed through the broken net, drawing the viewer’s eye. The vibrant orange of the net contrasts beautifully against the muted background, creating a powerful visual impact.
The way the net is layered in the foreground adds depth, acting almost like a veil that invites closer inspection. I appreciate how the birds in the background contribute to the scene. They add a lively touch, enhancing the sense of a bustling environment.
While I generally avoid images with a tilted horizon, in this case, it effectively creates tension and adds to the overall dynamism of the composition. The image might be enhanced further if the third person is positioned between the two main characters.
Overall, this picture demonstrates the photographer’s brave approach to capture the hard work and dedication of the fishermen while also highlighting the richness of their surroundings.
Morning In Durbar Square, Bhaktapur, Nepal by Kaikong Wong
In this street photo from Nepal, I am instantly drawn to the strong contrast between light and shadow. The sun filtering through the architecture creates a striking halo effect, adding a sense of drama and depth. The silhouette of the cyclist adds a human element, capturing the essence of movement and daily life.
The composition is well-balanced. The architectural details of the buildings, especially the pagoda-like structure, provide a rich cultural context that invites curiosity about the place. The interlocking bricks on the ground highlight the long history of civilization.
The monochrome treatment works beautifully to emphasize shapes and textures, minimizing distractions and allowing me to focus on the interplay of light and shadow. However, the image may be more striking if part of the sun is hidden behind the tower creating a sharper sun star.
Overall, I appreciate the moodiness and tranquility of this image. It evokes a sense of timelessness, inviting reflection on the beauty of everyday moments in such a historically rich environment.
Giving Alms, Laos by Liz Bugg
The vivid contrast of colours and the rich cultural narrative in this street scene of Laos are truly captivating. The vibrant orange robes of the monks immediately draw my attention, symbolizing their spiritual presence and the significance of the moment.
The composition effectively captures a slice of daily life, showcasing the tradition of almsgiving. The expressions of both the monks and the women convey a sense of respect and connection, which I find compelling. However a tighter focus on their interactions could have strengthened the emotional impact. While the background elements provide important context, they can also be somewhat distracting.
Overall, this photograph invites viewers to reflect on the significance of community and spirituality in daily life, making it a strong contender in this contest.
