With thanks to this month's adjudicator, Justin Cliffe.
A small selection of images to look through and enjoy this month, but from a number of interesting places.
After some considerable thought, I have come up with a shortlist, each image providing a really nice sense of place - by which I mean that, in looking at them, I can get a good understanding as to either the location, or the environment, where they were taken.
In the end, I have picked, as my winner of the October Image of the Month:
Canalside Communion, Venice by Robert Evans
This photograph is made for me by the light on the two women which, the title tells us, is beside a canal. What really helps, and provides a sense of place, is the alleyway and street name at the top, drawing my eye nicely through, and out of the frame.
The window at the top left provides an added dimension, particularly with the blue light coming through it, which contrasts nicely with the artificial light elsewhere in the image.
Perfectly exposed, in challenging light, a worthy winner.
Highly Commended images
Goat on a Rope, Karakol, Kyrgyzstan by Rob Morgan
The soft, early morning (?), light really helps this image, which is dominated by the man, with his goat, in the foreground, his red cap contrasting nicely with his blue trousers and jacket.
By placing him on the right of the frame - and looking across to something away to his right, we are drawn to what looks to be a market scene, with men & their sheep standing around and, further behind them, the snow-capped mountains in the distance.
The image is helped by the photographer having taken the image at a low angle. Nicely exposed, this is an evocative photograph that provides us with a good sense of daily life in this part of the world.
A nice piece of street photography here, with the animated reaction of the street seller giving a sense of engagement with the photographer.
Camera Reaction, Chefchaouene, Morocco by Jane Tearle
The blue walls, very much a feature of Chefchaouene, provide a pleasing backdrop which, with the trader’s produce lined up along the wall, give us a good sense as to where this was photographed.
Chicken and Fish Sellers, Nagaland, India by Jo Court
The photographer has captured a very typical scene in this part of the world - and done it very well. The lower camera angle used, the positioning of the man in the foreground grappling with his chicken and the inclusion of the other sellers in the background all help to create a real sense of the life going on in this market.
You may have noticed that all three Highly Commended images were taken in a market environment - great places, I find, for human interaction and things going on!
