The lone herdsman song, Kul, Kyrgyzstan by Rob Morgan ARPS

This lovely picture is almost a landscape, but the herdsman, with his dog, place it firmly into the Travel category; not only that it gives the picture scale and context. It gives a sense of isolation in a huge tundra landscape. It tells a story of a long way travelled and a long way still to go. It gives us a clue to the size of the mountains and to what a cold forbidding place this is. The herdsman is perfectly placed in the picture. This image mixes beauty with a degree of danger, in that we are in such a cold and isolated environment. Well done. It must have been quite an experience to have been there.

Threads of Tradition by Jo Court ARPS

It’s the ducks that do it! Their positioning is perfect leading us into the picture and the young lady at her loom. She is busy at work, so the fact that she’s not looking at the camera is not an issue. The choice of black and white is interesting, perhaps the fabrics in the background were too distracting. The important point is that the conversion works. The shafts of light across the image add to the picture. Then we look at the technology being used, as the title suggests it’s and ancient traditional bit of machinery. The composition is good and this is the epitome of a good travel image.

Street Scene, Syracuse, Sicily by David Pollard

There’s just something arresting about this photograph. It’s almost street photography, but the notices make it travel after all. Often in pictures text can be distracting, but in this image it is the main theme and trying to work out what this notice board is about is an interesting task! Crucifixes and black bouquets make me think it’s to do with the deceased. The black and white conversion is excellent and works well. The person in the frame and the crumbling walls around the notice board all are part of what makes this an excellent photo. PS If you’re in Sicily Syracuse is a great place to visit!

The Art Of Doing Nowt. by Glynn May

I like a bit of humour in a scene and the dilapidated nature of this photo gives us this. The state of the van, old and nearly falling apart. It’s packed to the gunnels with “stuff” and loaded up with mattresses on the roof. The detritus and assorted rubbish around the van make you wonder how long it’s been there. The two men set the scene perfectly, staring at the van with no intention of improving the situation! I enjoyed this image, Thanks'
