Elan Valley

Photographing the Elan Valley

Three days in one of Wales' most beautiful areas will provide opportunities for a wide range of photographic styles and interests - from the dams and the landscape around, through birdlife to the night sky.

Led by an experienced Travel Group member, who knows the area well, and based at the Elan Valley Hotel within the Elan Estate with exclusive use of the hotel, this time in mid-Wales offers an opportunity for many different types of photography. The hotel has 9 rooms, most are double or twin, so can be either sole occupancy or shared. There will be a reduction for shared rooms.

The cost - £650 -  includes half board accommodation and all activities.

When?      8-11 October 2024

Transport will not be for great distances and car-sharing is recommended.

Day One – Mid afternoon arrival at the hotel for welcome and introductions. With advance notice, early arrivals could go shoot Red Kites at the feeding centre, with exclusive use of a hide. Evening meal at the hotel. Subject to weather conditions we can go out late for a night shoot in the estate, either night sky or light paintng at Foel Valve Tower/Nantywyllt Church or one of the dams.

Day Two – Elan Valley tour with visits to all the main Dams and some workings. We hope this will include access to within the Dam and to some of the old workshop buildings. Locations will be chosen subject to access. Evening meal at the hotel – talk about the Elan Estate. Night shoot subject to weather.

Day Three – Tour out of the main flooded valleys to explore old industrial workings. Cwmystwyth Lead Mine Workings, The Arch, Devil Bridge, Old Railway and Hafod Estate. It may be possible to get a guide for the mine area, although there is plenty to shoot with easy access. Evening Meal at the hotel – talk on Dark Sky Reserve. Night shoot subject to weather.

Day Four – Depart after breakfast. Can organise further tour and photography subject to interest(s) of the group. Landscape, wildlife etc.

The hotel can be flexible on breakfast and meal times however these would be as a group. If there is interest in sunrise or sunset photography, we can arrange it for those wanting to maximum time out. Sunrise is around 07:30 and Sunset around 18:30 so possible for those keen but maybe not for everyone.

Access is easy to moderate. Most locations are no more than five minutes from the parking location, although the more adventurous can explore.

Please note that cancellation will only be possible before noon on September 19th.
