This week we are congratulating our Director of Programmes, Michael Pritchard, on 10 years working at the RPS.
Michael has been an integral part of the RPS, overseeing countless amazing events, exhibitions, awards and bursaries, as well as becoming the custodian of the RPS resource room and library.
More recently, he has applied his historical knowledge of the RPS to support the development of the exhibitions and education programmes, whilst also creating an archive of the RPS' own history, members and photographic work.
Colleagues and friends of Michael were keen to reflect on his work and contributions to photography. They write...
"The success or failure of any organisation is, to a very great extent, dependent upon the calibre, passion and commitment of the people who lead it and the Royal Photographic Society is no exception to this. Michael Pritchard is a friend who demonstrates the highest calibre of personal, academic and professional qualities. He has an all-consuming passion for and knowledge of photography - historic and contemporary - and a commitment to deliver unwavering support for the Society and for photographers - on a truly global stage. It is evident beyond doubt that Michael loves what he does and his work for photography occupies such a large part of his life; as photographers we all are the grateful beneficiaries of his tireless contribution to the art and science of our craft."
- Simon Hill HonFRPS, President & Chair of Trustees
"Michael Pritchard is like a living encyclopedia of photography. I am always amazed that he can reference the history of photography through his extensive knowledge. He also oversees and runs a blog on British photography which is essential reference material, and I always learn something new when I dip into this on Mondays when he sends out the weekly update."
- Martin Parr
"Michael Pritchard’s erudition and eloquence are cherished throughout the wide world of photography. What may be less apparent is his great sensitivity, and the modest care he takes to make sure everyone working with him gets recognition for their contributions. He has been an enormous support to me, since I joined as CEO last year; and I know that countless others throughout the organisation and beyond feel a similar gratitude for his careful advice and tireless commitment to excellence. I enjoy Michael’s company hugely, and look forward to working with him over the years to come."
- Evan Dawson, RPS CEO
Michael has brought his enthusiasm and passion for photography to his work at the RPS for the past 10 years, and we look forward to seeing what the next 10 years might hold.
