Renowned American street photographer, and recipient of a 2002 RPS Honorary Fellowship and the 2012 RPS Centenary Medal, Joel Meyerowitz HonFRPS joins RPS President Simon Hill HonFRPS in conversation in an exclusive RPS livestream on Monday, 29 July 2024.

Joel Meyerowitz is a renowned American photographer celebrated for his pioneering work in colour photography and his evocative street photography. Meyerowitz initially embarked on a career in advertising before shifting his focus to photography in the early 1960s. Inspired by the dynamic street scenes of New York City and the work of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Meyerowitz began to capture the vibrant and often chaotic life of the city through his lens.

He is widely recognized for his role in legitimizing color photography as a serious art form at a time when black-and-white was the dominant medium in the field. His groundbreaking book, Cape Light (1979), is a seminal work that showcases his mastery of color and light, capturing the serene and luminous landscapes of Cape Cod.

Throughout his career, Meyerowitz has exhibited a profound ability to convey the essence of a place and its people, whether through candid street scenes, expansive landscapes, or intimate portraits.  His dedication to the craft has earned him numerous accolades and his work has been featured in major museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London. In addition to his photographic practice, Meyerowitz has also made significant contributions as an educator and author, sharing his insights and experiences with new generations of photographers.

A pivotal moment in his career was his documentation of the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. As one of the few photographers granted unrestricted access to Ground Zero, Meyerowitz's poignant images provide a powerful and humane record of the devastation and recovery efforts, culminating in the publication of his book Aftermath (2006).

Joel Meyerowitz continues to inspire and influence photographers around the world.

Audience members will have the opportunity to engage with Meyerowitz during a Q&A session, where they can pose questions about his career, his working practices,  and his thoughts on the future of photography.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to gain insights from one of the most influential art photographers and prolific photo book publishers of our time.
