Renowned photographer and visual storyteller Steve McCurry HonFRPS joins RPS President Simon Hill HonFRPS in conversation in an exclusive RPS livestream.
McCurry, who is best known for his 1984 image Afghan Girl, which featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in June 1985, will discuss his career, offering insights into his experiences as a photographer and the stories behind some of his most iconic images.
He will share the challenges he faced while working in conflict zones and his approach to documenting the human condition amidst adversity. He will explore the background of his encounter with the Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula, revealing the circumstances that led to the capturing of that hauntingly powerful image, arguably one of the twentieth-century's most memorable images.
Through anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories, McCurry will provide a glimpse into the artistry and technical aspects of his photography, including his use of colour, composition, and light to convey emotion and narrative. He will discuss the ethical considerations involved in his particular style of photography, emphasising the importance of respecting the dignity and privacy of his subjects.
Audience members will have the opportunity to engage with McCurry during a Q&A session, where they can pose questions about his creative process, career highlights, and the evolving landscape of photography in the digital and AI age.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to gain insights from one of the most influential photographers of our time and discover the stories behind the images that have shaped our perception of the world.
