On May 26th 6 Members of the RPS Nature Group visited Rutland Water Reserve in Leicestershire under the leadership of Peter Ward. The weather was somewhat overcast when we started and later we had very dramatic skies, lightning and thunder.
We were greeted by the view of a close Hobby flying past the Visitor centre followed by 3 Cuckoos
We spent the morning in the various hides dodging the rain and attempting to photograph small birds including Reed Buntings, Sedge and Reed Warbler and Wrens as they flitted about in the vegetation. More cuckoos were sighted and from the Plover Hide we had our first good views of Osprey and Hobby as well as a fishing Great Crested Grebe.
After lunch in the Visitor Centre we explored the hides on the other side of the centre, starting in the Mallard hide with good views of hunting Hobbies as well as a Grey Heron. The weather became more exciting with flashes of lightining in the same frame in our view finders (unfortunately not captured) as a passing Hobby. Our last images of the day were from the visitor centre of a close Osprey and flying Cuckoo - unfortunately shot through double glazing.
