Many a photographer turned to their archive during the first lockdown of 2020, finding solace in images from the past while awaiting the chance to create more.
UK photographer Gavin Bond was one of those who metaphorically – and literally – dusted off his early work and uprooted a few surprises along the way.

The result is Gavin Bond: Being There, an exhibition of work shot backstage at some of the key fashion shows of the 1990s. The cast list is impressive – Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and more. And all photographed during candid moments at London Fashion Week while Bond was still an art student at the capital’s Central Saint Martins – now part of the University of the Arts London.
Bond’s secret was to use documentary style, and to shoot quickly using only natural light. The experience kick-started his career as editors began to take notice – Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Rolling Stone and GQ were among his clients.

Besides editorial work, Bond now focuses on advertising and film studio campaigns – his latest work includes the Marvel film Morbius and The Duke, starring Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent.
Gavin Bond: Being There, showing at Hamiltons Gallery, London, is the photographer’s first solo exhibition. It features 50 gelatin silver prints arranged to evoke the feeling of being backstage during those heady days of 1990s fashion.
