‘Savinjska valley, near Braslovce, Slovenia’ by AndreJa Ravnak, Travel Photographer of the Year 2023
A field of hop seedlings reaching for glittering wires are among the spellbinding agricultural landscapes captured by a Slovenian architect named Travel Photographer of the Year 2023.
AndreJa Ravnak is the second Slovenian photographer in a row to achieve the overall honours in the annual competition, following on from the success of Matjaz Krivic.
Besides the scenes inspired by her own rural upbringing, Ravnak’s winning portfolios include images of undulating wheat fields in Tuscany, Italy, and a fledgling orchard growing in South Moravia, Czech Republic.
RPS president Simon Hill HonFRPS, among the international panel of 16 jurors, says, “The essence of travel photography lies in capturing the essence of people, places and cultures across the globe, offering a visual chronicle of the photographer’s adventures and encounters.
“AndreJa Ravnak’s images beautifully exemplify how the most exceptional works in this field can seamlessly blend into the realm of fine art, showcasing both storytelling prowess and artistic depth.”
More than 20,000 images were submitted by amateur and professional photographers from more than 150 countries in the 2023 competition.
The category winners include a Bedouin leaping between rocks at the Treasury of Petra; a yellow gobby peering out from a bottle on a polluted ocean floor; four members of Nigeria’s national amputee football team The Special Eagles; and a shaman at the sacred Lake Baikal, Siberia. An image of a young wildebeest lost in the chaos of migration at Maasai Mara, Kenya, achieved the People’s Choice Vote.
The top images will be exhibited at The Photography and Video Show, NEC, Birmingham, UK, before touring to Xposure in the UAE.
