About the Photographer
Rick Findler completed a Masters in Photojournalism at the University of Westminster in 2009, and have been an independent photojournalist since. His work focusses on features and stories both here in The UK and abroad. Drawn to stories of hidden cultures (Monks on Mount Athos, Greece 2016), human interest stories such as female skiers in Afghanistan(2021), conflict (most recently The West Bank 2024) and news stories with global importance such as the USPresidential Elections.
It was only when I began speaking to many of those who lived there that I realised just how much of an existential threat their culture is facing.
Proposed Project
A photographic project focussing on the indigenous Native Americans, the threats to their culture and their ever-diminishing presence in today's society. It will showcase their colourful traditions such as aztec dancers, inter-tribal ceremonies and skills passed down through generations whilst also touching on the existential risk to their heritage in the modern world.
The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian reservation in The USA. It spans an enormous 16 million acres and is home to300,000 members.Today, their culture and way of life stand at a critical crossroads as it navigates the complexities of modern society.The subject matter of the project will specifically focus on their traditions and identities, while also highlighting the challenges these communities face. Everything from well-lit portraits and open ceremonies to private and intimate moments. All of this will culminate in an emotional and inspiring project of despair but also one of resilience and the beauty of rich heritage.
