POST GRADUATE BURSARY 2023

Supported by MPB
As part of The RPS remit as an educational charity we offer an annual bursary of £3,500 in support of a postgraduate student. For this bursary, photography is interpreted in its widest sense to include digital and traditional photographic media, the art and science of photography and image based written work.

Applications are invited from postgraduate students on courses in photography or undertaking research in photography and can apply at any stage of their studies, but must demonstrate a specific outcome for their proposed project.

Anna Shimshak

Anna Shimshak

Anna is a practicing artist and researcher. Her work sits at the intersection of human computer interaction, gender studies, art and sociology. In her art practice, Anna’s work explores the body, power and representation in both art historical canons and digital space.
She is currently a PhD candidate in the Emerging Technologies Research Lab at Monash University. Her current research explores the representation and construction of the body in embodied sextech. More broadly, Anna is concerned with the larger ramifications of gender construction in technology and automated systems.

Chi Chi Cheng

Chi Chi Cheng a multidisciplinary artist from Hong Kong with a background in neuroscience. In our times of social cognition arising from hyper-capitalism, health inequality and divided nations, her goal is to bring neuroscience research to the general public with innovative approaches and impactful stories - for a world with better brain health, mental resilience, and no psychiatric medicine. 

She is currently pursuing my Master of Science in Applied Neuroscience at King's College London and studied at Hong Kong Baptist University and Zurich University of the Arts for my Master of Arts in Visual Arts.

Deacon Lui

Deacon Lui

Lui Siu Bon Deacon is a London-based photographer who was born in Hong Kong in 1996. He is currently pursuing an MA in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism at the London College of Communication. Deacon's artistic practice is rooted in capturing the human experience through photography. Through his lens, Deacon seeks to illuminate the resilience and resistance of those who are often overlooked by mainstream media narratives. His work embodies a deep commitment to social justice and human rights, and he believes that photography can serve as a powerful tool for inspiring empathy, understanding, and change.

Kamal Badhey

Kamal Badhey

Kamal Badhey (she/her) is a photographer, educator and independent curriculum designer of South Asian ancestry with an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London, and an MS in Museum Education from Bank Street College. Her visual storytelling includes both long and short term projects, where she engages in practices of portraiture, art, ethnography, fashion, and documentary. She is a member of the Urban Photographers Association and South Asian Women’s Creative Collective.  She is interested in ideas of dispersal, diaspora and origin pilgrimages and uses photography and oral storytelling to stitch together stories.

Mat Chacon

Mat Chacon is an award-winning, internationally exhibited and published documentary photojournalist and fine art photographer. His photographic practice see’s him navigating high-risk conflict zones, and capturing images that tell the stories everyone should know. His current project titled Legado, is a visual exploration of his Spanish-Mexican heritage as a new father.

Sophie Collins

Sophie is the Chief Marketing Officer for MPB and leads their full-funnel integrated marketing efforts globally. Before joining MPB, Sophie had 15+ years of experience in performance and digital marketing that spanned key agency and in-house roles across a range of brands including Apple, Sony, Kodak, IBM, American Express, British Airways and DAZN. Sophie is also a dedicated amateur photographer who has studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, and is proud to bring her passion for photography together with her passion for purpose-driven marketing. Anthony Luvera
Anthony Luvera

Anthony Luvera is an artist, writer and educator. His work has been exhibited widely including Tate Liverpool, The Gallery at Foyles, the British Museum, London Underground’s Art on the Underground, National Portrait Gallery London, Belfast Exposed Photography, PhotoIreland, Malmö Fotobiennal, Goa International Photography Festival, and Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie. Anthony is also Chair of the RPS Education Committee. 
 
Anthony is currently an Associate Professor of Photography in the Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities at Coventry University, and editor of Photography For Whom?,
a periodical about socially engaged photography.

Michael Pritchard
Dr Michael Pritchard

Dr Michael Pritchard is a former photography specialist at Christie’s auction house and a photographic historian. He has written and lectured extensively on many aspects of the history of photography in the UK and abroad.


Michael has been a selector for many other competitions include the HIPA Awards, Travel Photographer of the Year, Food PotY, the IPA, the Lucie Awards and others. He heads the RPS education and public programmes.
