Meet the artist

Tom Hunter is an artist using photography and film, living and working in East London. He is a Professor of Photography at the London College of Communication, and the University of the Arts London. Tom is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East London.

Tom became well known in the 1990s for his series of photographs depicting his friends, often young and not mainstream, in compositions based on European Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite painting. The images referred to specific artists and narratives; and importantly strove to translate the sumptuous density of colour pigment on canvas into the photographic image.

The images featured in the Squaring the Circles exhibition are from Tom's series, Prayer Places.
