Kelp Abstracts

My panel explores the strange and unexpected beauty of the kelp found around Kearney Point, County Down, in a set of intimate still lifes.

These prints are part of an ongoing project in which I have made dozens of visits to photograph the seaweed washed up on these beaches. I move nothing, relying on the arrangements made by the tides and wind, seeking out glimmers of light and focal points around which to create small, abstract compositions.

In these images, I have aimed to capture telling colours, textures, details and juxtapositions, framing the natural forms and shapes of the kelp to communicate a sense of mystery and wonder.
