Being raised and living in the centre of the country, a trip to the coast is always a delightful experience, regardless of the weather.
Walking along our coastline and estuaries I have encountered places where small communities and families once owed their existence to in-shore fishing. Many of these have long since turned their backs on fishing, no longer a viable living. Occasionally, a few working boats can still be found, hauled up out of the water
ready for the next outing, their owners struggling to make a viable living from fishing.
More often, I come across the sad remains of fishing boats, once proudly owned and cherished, that have been abandoned, unwanted, uncared for, slowly rotting and rusting away, long forgotten about by their owners and families as they’ve been replaced by newer boats or they’ve sought to earn a living elsewhere.
