As an ex-resident, I experienced, and still experience, Hong Kong as a city of boundless commercial energy and possibility. Somewhere entrepreneurs can set up shop to make money from the many who work long hours and into the night. A place where these small businesses find a toehold in the city’s narrow urban gullies. And just as before, ordinary Hongkongers navigate their way by foot or tram through the faded, concrete canyons formed by the tall buildings. But against the constant press of this city, traditional behaviours hold on. Locals still make time for their spiritual wellbeing in small city temples or find room to pause and breathe around the precious expanse of Hong Kong harbour.
These recent photographs capture this sense of place that I gained during my time living and working in Hong Kong, and I still witness today as a visitor.
