Case Study: Mick Yates ‘Unfinished Stories’
Well, whilst I came into the course with a very clear idea of the outcomes - work which told the previously untold personal stories of our Cambodian friends who survived the Khmer Rouge Genocide, executed in an exhibition and a book - the way the work was developed changed markedly. I originally thought it was as simple as portrait work accompanying the stories.
Instead, it turned out to be an exploration of the depiction of Genocide well after the time it happened, and a study of the ethics of photography as appropriate to visualising such intense, personal stories. It also became a full-on multi-media exercise, with photography, sound and video recordings.
Stepping back, the MA also gave me a serious grounding in both the history of photography, and the issues that arise from it from the viewpoint of photographer, viewer and curator. It eventually gave me the confidence to co-found a new festival of photography, Photo|Frome, with which Jesse [Photography MA Course Leader] is intimately involved.
Mick’s project ‘Unfinished Stories’ formed the centrepiece of his MA Photography (Online) in 2018
