AN INTAKE OF AIR
These images illustrate elements of the design of air intakes of jet aircraft. The aircraft originate from the 1940s to the present day.
As an engineer and aviation enthusiast I appreciate the engineering design of these aircraft components. I also see an aesthetic beauty in the designs. Looking past the functionality, concentrating on line, shape and form, gives the images an artistic quality. The realism fades with a move towards abstraction. It highlights the contrast between the smooth curves of the older jets and the geometric shapes of the more recent supersonic aircraft, the contrast between simple forms and more complex geometries.
This is a tribute to all those artistic aircraft designers.
