From a a series of negatives of Malaysia c.1920s
Whiteway, Laidlaw & Co. Ltd was founded in 1882. It was a department store chain originally established in Calcutta and in twenty other cities in India, along with branches in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai. It was nicknamed 'the Selfridges of the East' and remained in business until 1962.
The Kuala Lumpur store was located at Java Street, now Jalan Tun Perak.
