Photography and Artificial Intelligence: a conference
Bristol, 9 & 10 October 2023
The Royal Photographic Society and its members have always been at the forefront of new technology in photography since its founding in 1853: from collodion to dry plates, colour photography, moving image and digital photography. AI represents a next step in this technical evolution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been part of photographic production for several years but the easy availability of generative AI has prompted concerns about AI’s impact on photography, as well as an interest in new ways of creating images in equal measure, notwithstanding ethical and legal issues. With this two-day conference the RPS presents a series of eighteen international speakers - all specialists, academics or creatives - and four keynote presentations that will discuss the impact and opportunities of AI for photography, as well technical, legal and philosophical issues.
The conference is arranged in four panels: Introductory; History, Theory Application; Legal, Rights Practice; and Creative Practice over two days. Each panel will be followed by a Q+A with the speakers. It is presented in a hybrid format: live in RPS House, Bristol, and Livestreamed.
Hear from leaders of the Association of Photographers, National Union of Journalists, and Royal Photographic Society, leading academics studying AI and its impact, meaning and use, industry figures, international lawyers dealing with AI, and creatives and photographers using AI and opportunities offered by it.
Delegates attending in person will receive a conference pack including programme, paper abstracts and speaker biographies. Light refreshments will be available during the two days (lunch is available close by). For information on local hotels and travel information please use the contact tab above. For those attending the Livestream the conference pack will be sent via PDF. Access details will be emailed in advance.
