Night landscapes and astrophotography - POSTPONED

Event info

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE IN THE INTERESTS OF SOCIAL DISTANCING

A chance to join a two-evening night-landscape and astrophotography workshop on the Northumberland coast led by award winning Ollie Taylor.  Ollie is considered one of the pioneers of nightscape photography within the UK, he is widely published and helped to take the genre mainstream towards the start of the current decade.

The workshop will comprise two elements; an after-dark location shoot on day 1 and an evening post-production workshop on day 2.

PLEASE NOTE:  To maximise the chances of good weather for shooting, days 1 and 2 may be reversed.  The decision will be made by Ollie at short notice before the 22nd.  IF YOU BOOK THIS EVENT, YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE ON BOTH DATES. No refunds will be given unless the event is cancelled altogether by Ollie because of the weather.  (If the days are reversed, Ollie will provide sample images for use during the post-production workshop.)

What the workshop will cover:

Planning:

  • in depth session on global nightscape locations

  • time of year/night planning and shooting

  • demonstration of apps and useful websites to help achieve successful future shoots.

Shooting:

  • focusing

  • camera settings

  • composition

  • long exposures and advanced techniques for “magazine quality images”

Post production:

  • advanced editing using a combined workflow on Lightroom and Photoshop.

There will be a maximum of 8 participants.

The workshop will be structured at a steady pace to ensure everyone has a full understanding of how the techniques are implemented to give professional standard images, every time. It will be suitable for beginner and intermediate photographers, though you will need to be able to operate manual camera mode.

Participants must have a basic understanding of manual camera settings and know how to change aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Practical matters

NB The timings above are approximate and will also be confirmed nearer the time.

Light fitness level will be required, and coastal path descents and ascents over uneven surfaces will need to be negotiated in the dark.

Please bring / wear:

  • a camera body with manual controls

  • the widest possible lens

  • longer focal length lenses

  • remote / cable release

  • tripod

  • warm outdoor clothes

  • footwear suited to rugged terrain

  • head torch ideally with a red light to avoid blinding other participants

  • sandwiches, snacks or similar and flask with hot drink

  • laptop with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop installed. (If you don't have Lightroom, it will be possible to complete the editing workshop using Camera Raw.)

Accommodation

It is highly recommended that two/three nights accommodation is secured for this workshop unless living within a 50 or so mile radius.  Self-catering accommodation is likely to be more suitable than hotels or B&Bs because of the potential for late check-in or and wanting a lie-in!

This will be a category C event for up to 6 people.  Category C means events that focus on a particular skill or technique (such as long exposures, composition or night photography) and/or on getting the best from a particular location. The event leader will have good location knowledge to ensure that the best is made of the prevailing conditions and will be a skilled landscape photographer able to offer tuition at all levels. These events are usually led by professionals but sometimes by volunteer members of the landscape group.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation by You

If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.

If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.

Cancellation by us

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
