Event info

A hybrid online / on-location workshop for 6 participants.  Tickets will go on sale on 5 January.

Architects have become the new rock stars of our visual world. From Daniel Libeskind’s Northern Imperial War Museum in Manchester to Renzo Piano’s Shard in London and Norman Foster’s Armadillo in Glasgow, the UK is Littered with stunning examples of modern buildings. Architectural landscapes make compelling images that can tell many different stories. Fine art photographic interpretations range from high key geometric patterns through reflections of today’s cosmopolitan cityscapes to sombre dark dystopias of untrammelled corporate power.

This multistage workshop led by David Rosen is designed to set your imagination on fire in your local city - wherever you are in the world. The first three sessions will expose you to the concept , technical capture challenges and post-processing possibilities involved in fine art architectural photography.

The three initial workshops are set up as follows:

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 1: In the first workshop we will discuss the creative possibilities of shooting modern architecture in a fine art style. Different approaches will be examined and example images analysed. You will be encouraged to explore a range of styles and to envision how you might incorporate any of these styles into your workshop location shoot project.

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 2: Architectural photography is more challenging and requires more precise planning and execution at the capture stage than other sub-genres of fine art photography. Dealing with perspectives, geometry distortion and correction, avoiding unwanted reflections and the removal of incidental and unwanted visual clutter is all part of the required photographer’s skill set. Not to mention avoiding the dangers of traffic, and over-zealous building security guards both of which require careful navigation. During this session, the structure of a successful architectural location shoot will be described in detail as guidance for you upcoming project.

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 3: Successful fine art images demand a high degree of luminance control. What might look dramatic and impressive while on location in 3D, can often look dull and flat as a 2D image. By making a series of carefully executed selections and re-rendering your chosen architectural subject, your final image can be made to look imposing and dimensional. Together with selective gradient mapping of distracting skies and non-essential surrounding areas you can develop a strong emotional backdrop for the chosen building or cityscape.

INDIVIDUAL ON-LOCATION SHOOT: Following the initial three workshops, you will be given 6 weeks to design and develop your own architectural on-location project in your chosen local city. You will be asked to create three images within different fine art styles across one, two or three chosen buildings. This will include a phase of pre-envisioning and the creation of a brief statement of intent with regards how you plan to shoot your images.

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAYS 4 & 5: Each participant will be asked to send their three images and project briefs one week in advance to the workshop leader. David will prepare in-depth feedback and will ask you to present your project including the three images for discussion during the course of the two days.

Following the workshops, David will be available for one-to-one tuition on any aspect of fine art photography at an additional cost. Times and dates to be arranged individually.

To participate in this workshop you will need:

- Camera
- Tripod
- Neutral density filters
- Wide angle lens

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
