Water, water everywhere

Event info

A hybrid online / on-location workshop for 6 participants.  Tickets will go on sale on 5 January.

In fine art photography, it is the vision, interpretation and creative expression of you the photographer that defines the image. What may be viewed by the passer-by or casual snapper as an ordinary or mundane seascape can be transformed in fine art photography. Pre-envisioning, challenging compositional orthodoxy, and exploratory post-processing techniques can deliver dramatic and compelling seascape images.

This workshop, led by David Rosen, has been designed to expose you to the possibilities of fine art photography, sharing with you the most important elements during each of the key stages. After a series of three fine art workshops, You will be given 6 weeks to bring your knowledge and skills to life by envisioning, shooting and creating a series of three fine art images at one of your nearest coastlines. You will then have the opportunity in a further two workshops of sharing your planned intent, captured images, and experiences of your location shoot and receiving detailed creative and technical feedback.

The three initial workshops are set up as follows:

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 1: In the first workshop the techniques involved in fine art pre-envisioning will be explored. These include setting an emotional target for the image, dynamic range considerations, dominance of negative space and anticipating the viewer journey:

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 2: Various aspects of in-camera theory and technique critical within fine art will be discussed and explained. This will include advanced long-exposure techniques and alternative equipment choices as well as multiple exposure options for exposure, perspective and image blending.

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAY 3: Various post-processing strategies will be shared and explained. These will include advanced selection techniques, luminosity masking, selective gradient mapping and blend mode/blend if combinations in photoshop as well as the use of Nik software and Adobe Camera Raw/Lightroom for various fine art processing techniques.

INDIVIDUAL ON-LOCATION SHOOT: Each participant will be asked to develop and execute their own brief over the next 6 weeks. This will be based around a location of your choice and at dates and times that are convenient for you but cognisant of weather and tides. This brief should comprise three separate fine art images across the three fine art genres discussed and using the techniques and skills shared over the three workshop sessions.

ONLINE WORKSHOP DAYS 4 & 5: Each participant will be asked to send their three images one week in advance to the workshop leader. This should include a brief statement showing your advance intent before embarking on the capture and processing of each of the images. David will prepare in-depth feedback and will ask you to present your three images for discussion during the course of the two days.

Following the workshops, David will be available for one-to-one tuition on any aspect of fine art photography at an additional cost. Times and dates to be arranged individually.

To participate in this workshop you will need:

- Camera
- Tripod
- Neutral density filters
- Wide angle lens
- Computer with webcam and microphone and internet connection
- Access to a coastal location.

Cancellation by us

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
