The Hermitage in autumn colours

Event info

An on-location workshop for up to six participants led by local professional photographer Annette Forsyth.  Tickets will go on sale on 1 August.

The Hermitage is well known for its impressive waterfall and folly on the River Braan and is surrounded by beautiful mixed woodland that comes into its own during Autumn. At the beginning of November, the colours are usually at their peak. The site in Craigvinean Forest is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and there is a fine network of paths to discover.

Apart from the obvious views of the falls and the folly, we will have time to explore further, concentrating on the woodland and other river sections which give opportunities to get creative with shutter speeds and produce more intimate images.  Depending on the forecast on the day, we will have a second stop at Rumbling Bridge or the Inchewan Burn, both of which are close by.

We will walk about 5 km in the course of the day.  Unfortunately, this workshop is not suitable for wheelchair users. Participants should be reasonably sure footed and take care around slippery rocks on the river banks.

Please bring / wear:
- packed lunch & drink
- money, should we have to shelter from rain in a cafe for a while
- waterproofs
- walking boots
- warm layers and gloves
- a sturdy umbrella and wellies can be a great help.

If you like to get down low, waterproof trousers, a kneeling pad or a simple plastic bag are useful.

Photographic Equipment:

- tripod
- polariser (very much recommended)
- neutral density filters
- graduated Filters if you have them.
- variety of lenses from wide-angle to telephoto (up to 200mm sufficient)
- macro lens as desired
- spare batteries & memory cards
- lens cloths (there can be lots of spray from the waterfall!)
- change for parking and toilets.

This will be a group C event for up to six people.

Ticket prices for this event include a £2 carbon offsetting charge.  For more information click here.

Social distancing:

If still applicable, he workshop leader will be following safe practices in line with social distancing guidance and will require participants to do the same.  Please do not attend if you do not wish to comply.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation by You

If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.

If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.

Cancellation by us

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
