Northumberland coast

Event info

This will be an on location event for up to 6 people.  Tickets will go on sale on 1 September.

Join Colin Jarvis on this single day Northumberland coast workshop. We will explore a small area of this beautiful coastline to take in some of the iconic spots. We will begin at Bamburgh Castle to photograph the castle from the rocky shoreline which provides a great foreground to this majestic structure.

We will then travel the short distance to Dunstanburgh castle to photograph the castle from Cannonball beach as the tide comes in to surround the large black boulders on this stretch of coastline. Please be aware that these rocks are very slippy so I would recommend grippers on the bottom of your wellies. Clients that do not wish to proceed across the boulders can shoot the castle from further back.

We will then travel to Sugar Sands beach for the high tide for sunset. This is a great location to shoot when the tide is in and we are particularly fortunate that it coincides with sunset.

Full tuition will be given and the use of Colin's filters if you don’t yet own any. The use of filters for dramatic effect will be explored. This will cover neutral density filters to slow the shutter speed creating atmospheric water movement, graduated neutral density filters to balance the exposure between the land and sky, and extreme ‘big stopper’ filters to create wonderful movement in the clouds and water. Technical aspects will be explored including achieving accurate exposure using the manual setting of the camera along with making creative decisions regarding aperture and depth of field. There really is no better way to develop your craft than by ‘getting out there and doing it’. Colin will provide you with a friendly, fun and informative workshop experience that will, I am sure, leave you with some memorable images to add to your portfolio.

The terrain is slippy so care should be taken. Wellies and grippers will be essential.

Toilets are available in Bamburgh and Seahouses. There will be a coffee stop at some point in the morning and lunch can be taken when convenient.

There is a supermarket nearby in Seahouses.

If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.

Cancellation by us

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
