Surf and turf: autumn colours and Turner's seascapes

Event info

This will be an on-location workshop with Alex Hare for up to six participants.  Tickets will go on sale on 1 July.

Tickets are now on sale. Bookings can be made direct with the RPS by phoning 0117 3164 464, or emailing info@rps.org with details of your booking request and a member of the booking team will get back to you regarding payment. This is an interim arrangement until the new RPS IT system is operational. Thank you for your forbearance.

This event in Kent is designed to explore the two principle subjects we often capture as landscape photographers; land and sea. Timed to suit the tides, we’ll meet in the lovely fishing town of Whitstable and enjoy exploring the coastline here taking in the boats, fishing harbour, shingle beaches, oyster trestles, big skies (Turner himself sketched here) and natural land forms.

We’ll look at a variety of techniques, including long exposures, graduated filters and compositions that offer an alternative to the rule of thirds and see how Turner composed his seascapes here and how we might adopt these into our photography.

We’ll break for lunch and enjoy a classic seaside fish and chips or use a café for sandwiches, depending on your preference!

After lunch, we’ll head to a fabulous, mature, beech woodland to capture the autumn colours in a forest Henry VIII frequented for his hunting pastime!

Here, we’ll practice various types of approach to woodland, from classic compositions to more abstract ideas drawing on techniques for ICM and multiple exposure to create a broad range of creative responses.

This will conclude what will be a busy, varied and fun day out.

Alex will gladly talk to you about using your images in a hand made book and show some examples to provide you with display options/ideas for your work.

Nothing strenuous, all locations are over flat even ground, the occasional beach and close to our parking spots.  Most of the locations are away from any designated public footpaths.. None of the locations are more than a few minutes walk from the parking.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation by You

If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.

If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.

Cancellation by us

Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control.

Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.

Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
