'The Time is Right' with Zelda Cheatle

The RPS Women in Photography Group are pleased to host a talk with Zelda Cheatle HonFRPS, recipient of the RPS Award for Outstanding Contribution to Photography 2021.

Zelda has over 35 years experience in the industry.  She is a highly acclaimed editor, educator and curator.  

With her latest project, Zelda is curating an international exhibition for the inaugural Jeddah Photo in Saudi Arabia.  The Saudi Art Council (SAC) have joined forces with the new Ministry of Culture and the Museums Commission to organise an open call for Saudi nationals.  The SAC have commissioned and are hosting the festival in Jeddah. 

The show will include Saudi nationals as well as international artists including Susan Derges (UK) and Laura El Tantaway (Egyptian, London born).  The curatorial direction which bring these artists together is their awareness of the fragility of life on earth, our place within it, how we perceive our role and responsibilities and how The Time is Right to be aware of these issues.  The exhibition is also pushing the boundaries of the medium of photography.

For a predominantly male oriented culture, Zelda notes that it is a turning point for a woman to be asked to curate an exhibit there.  Added to that, more than half of the participating artists are women.  The show will run from February through April. 

Zelda's talk will give attendees a first look at this exciting new exhibition.

All proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the new RPS Women in Photography Bursary.

The event will be organised on Zoom and will not be recorded.
