Archaeology & Heritage

Founded in 1974 as the RPS Archaeology Group, the Archaeology & Heritage Group has since expanded to include a wide variety of heritage interests and activities.

About the Group

Archaeology and heritage has always been of interest to photographers and from its inseption int he 1970s, this group helped shape archaeological photography and recording.  Photography is now an integral part of recording archaeological sites and the profession well established.  What has followed is photography to help illustrate and understand hetitage in all its forms, from a delicate worked mesololithic flint blade, to an expanse of cold war military structurea and everything in between. Its more than parish churches and buildings, its objects, places and people.

It is a skill  to put over often complicated information about the past into a photograph, and to engage and enthuse the public with that image.  A photo tells a story that often words cannot fully portray.

As with many groups we are slowly emerging from the post covid period, and while we acknowlege the pandemic is not over, it has resulted in is being to reach out to more members digitally through online means.  However we hope in the coming months to offer small, local meet ups to photograph places acrous the country and so what our pages for more information on these.

A periodical Exhibition of Members’ prints is displayed at appropriate venues,  and our regular Heritage Photography journal is mailed to all Members – sample copies, a Programme of Events and full details of the Group’s activities may be obtained from our Secretary.
