- Ralf Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882)

 

Ralf Waldo Emerson, who preferred to use his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher and abolitionist.  He was also a poet who helped to form the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century.
