Photographing Dame Harriett Baldwin at Westminster for the 40% Project was a real pleasure. She was welcoming, generous with her time and genuinely engaged in the spirit of the project — celebrating the growing number of women shaping Parliament today.
Harriett chose to wear a rich purple velvet jacket as a nod to the suffragettes, which felt especially fitting in that historic setting. She also brought with her a small suffragette decoration, the one she usually hangs on her Christmas tree, a thoughtful detail that gently connected the determination of the past with the progress of the present.
Partway through the session, she briefly stepped away and returned with coffee for us, a small but kind gesture that set a relaxed and friendly tone for the shoot.
Harriett has been the MP for West Worcestershire since 2010 and was made a Dame in 2024 for her parliamentary and public service. During her time in Parliament she has held senior roles across government, including at the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence, and has represented the UK internationally. Before entering politics, she built a successful career in finance, experience she later brought into public life.
Alongside her parliamentary work, Harriett has consistently supported charities, community organisations and causes focused on education, health, families and workplace flexibility. She speaks openly about balancing public life with family life, and lives in the Teme Valley with her husband Jim and their three children.
The portrait session felt like a fitting reflection of Harriett who is thoughtful and committed to public service. She honours the women who came before her and actively encourages those who will follow, embodying the strength and purpose at the heart of the 40% Project.
