Recreating the Masters
Recreating the Masters
A Women in Photography Challenge
We’re inviting you to recreate — and reimagine — a work of art through photography.
Choose a painting, sculpture, or iconic artwork and bring it to life in your own way. You might recreate it faithfully, reinterpret it in a contemporary setting, or respond to it with a completely new perspective.
This challenge is about more than replication. It’s about how we see, represent, and reframe art today.
You can:
- recreate the composition as closely as possible
- place it in a modern or personal context
- respond to the themes or narrative in your own way
- use simple, everyday materials or carefully constructed sets
You’re welcome to choose any artist, but we especially encourage you to explore work by women artists, representations of women in art, or images you feel deserve a new perspective.
Whether thoughtful, playful, or powerful, we’d love to see your take.
Inspiration
Recreating artworks has been explored in many creative ways — from highly detailed recreations to playful and modern interpretations. In one example challenge, participants restaged iconic works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Van Gogh, sometimes faithfully and sometimes with a contemporary twist.
You can explore a collection of these recreations here:

Or take inspiration from well-known artworks and reinterpret them in your own way — whether carefully staged or created with simple materials at home.
